This was in sharp contrast to the rhetoric of digital history’s potential as a source of new methods and new questions. Despite these lofty promises, research methods in digital history would take much longer to appear in the self-learning resources, despite no shortage of historians using advanced data analysis for research (cultural historian Ben Schmidt’s Sapping Attention blog is a key example). Few people were willing to explain those methods in this subject-neutral space, in part because in many national contexts there was a lack of scholarly credit for such work, and in part because these analyses were not inherently computational skills but interdisciplinary and often social-science-based approaches that drew on the analysis of well-structured machine-readable data. Schmidt’s methods could best be described as a combination of linguistics and statistics. Turkel’s more recent “Digital Research Methods with Mathematica” (2015) took a similar approach, with sections on word frequencies, pattern matching, concordance, and TF-IDF (term frequency-inverse document frequency).58 These were all concepts in linguistics, which were increasingly being used by historians to answer historical questions with the mass-digitized archives that had become available. That raised questions as to where one might need to turn to learn the relevant skills: historical pedagogy sources, or linguistic ones. It also harked back to Zoe LeBlanc’s plea on Twitter, asking when exactly she was meant to fit that extra learning into her already busy schedule.
